The morning of our Aruba trip, my passport was gone. I knew exactly where I had left it.
Then my mother-in-law smirked and said, “Maybe you weren’t meant to go.”
That twitch in her eye? Guilty.
She thought she had won. I told them to leave without me, and she boarded that plane, feeling victorious.
But what she didn’t know was that I made one phone call—and turned her little game into a twist she never saw coming.

I immediately called the airline and explained the situation. They told me that as long as I could get a same-day passport replacement, I could catch the next connecting flight to Aruba.
So, off I went—straight to the passport office with every piece of ID I had. Thanks to expedited processing (and a sympathetic agent who heard my story), I had a brand-new passport in my hand within hours.
By that evening, I was on a plane headed to Aruba.
When I arrived at the resort the next morning, I walked into the lobby as my husband and his family were checking in. The look on my MIL’s face was priceless—her jaw literally dropped.
“Surprised to see me?” I asked sweetly, holding up my shiny new passport. My husband rushed over and hugged me, thrilled that I’d made it.
But the real kicker? On the flight she had taken, their luggage had been delayed—meaning everyone’s bags (including hers) didn’t arrive on time. She had to spend the first two days of vacation without her carefully packed outfits, while I, thanks to my later flight, had my luggage safe and sound.
Karma has a sense of humor.
The rest of the trip, she avoided eye contact, but I made sure to enjoy every moment—lounging by the pool, sipping cocktails, and exploring the island.
And every time she saw me laughing with her son, she was reminded of one very important lesson: you can try to sabotage me, but I’ll always find a way to rise above.
