Donald\u2019s house burned down two months ago while he was at the supermarket, and he suffered a heart attack when he got home. He was taken to the hospital, and his son, Peter, and Peter\u2019s wife insisted on moving him in with them after he recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But they were a couple in their 30s with three young kids, and now they had to care for an older man in their already hectic home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donald was well aware of this. So, after gathering his strength, he told his son that he wanted to move into a nursing home. Peter asked him to put it off for a while, but Donald insisted they go and look at one nearby. Peter agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not at 7-Eleven, Dad. Look up,\u201d Peter urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Donald slowly looked up\u2026 and blinked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It wasn\u2019t 7-Eleven. It wasn\u2019t the nursing home, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was a small, tidy one-story house with a white fence, a garden full of yellow roses, and a hand-painted sign above the porch that read: He turned to Peter, confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Peter smiled, but his eyes were misty. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a store, Dad. And it\u2019s not a nursing home. We even made sure it\u2019s got wide doors for the walker, rails in the bathroom, all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Donald couldn\u2019t speak. He looked back at the little house, the sun casting a warm glow on the porch steps, and then at his son\u2014the boy he once held through long fevers and broken hearts, now a man, holding him<\/em> in a moment of complete love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI thought I was a burden,\u201d Donald finally whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re not,\u201d Peter said firmly. \u201cYou\u2019re our father. You\u2019re family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Donald wiped his eyes and slowly opened the car door. As he stepped out, the front door of the house opened.
