On the other side of the screen, the priest smiles kindly and says, \u201cWelcome, my child. What would you like to confess today?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethel sighs, the kind of sigh that suggests she\u2019s been holding onto something juicy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFather,\u201d she begins, \u201cI have a confession. Last night, I went out with a twenty-two-year-old man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a pause. The priest blinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethel keeps going. \u201cHe took me to dinner. He kept asking if I was tired. \u2018Do you need to sit down?\u2019 \u2018Are you okay?\u2019 Such a gentleman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s\u2026 considerate,\u201d the priest mutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd when I told him my age,\u201d she adds, \u201che nearly dropped his wine glass. Poor thing looked like he\u2019d seen a ghost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d the priest asks, against his better judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethel grins. \u201cHe said, \u2018Ma\u2019am, you don\u2019t look a day over seventy-five.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pauses. \u201cI tipped him extra for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The priest sighs deeply. \u201cEthel\u2026 the church teaches modesty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, I was modest,\u201d she replies. \u201cI wore flats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a long silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the priest clears his throat. \u201cAnd\u2026 what do you plan to do now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ethel brightens. \u201cOh, I\u2019ve got plans.
