A week later, Aunt Diane and Uncle Gary showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“You’re still a kid,” she said, all fake concern. “Max needs stability. A real home.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They never cared before. Now they wanted custody?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve wasted this court\u2019s time, and worse \u2014 you\u2019ve treated this child like a paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMr. Ryan, it\u2019s clear your love for your brother is genuine. I hereby grant you full legal guardianship of Max.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAre we going home now?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going home, buddy. For good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
