The truth? He hasn\u2019t paid child support in six months, cancels every other weekend visit, and hasn\u2019t called Emma in three weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when he texted me, “Thinking of stopping by Sunday to see Emma for Father\u2019s Day,”<\/em> I was more than a little surprised.
But I played it cool. \u201cSure,\u201d<\/em> I replied. \u201cCome by at 3.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 2:58 p.m., he pulled into the driveway \u2014 he was not alone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Out stepped Kyle in his freshest cologne, holding a gift bag. And beside him\u2026 some blonde in a sundress and high heels, holding her phone up like she was documenting a red carpet entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is Ava, my new girlfriend,\u201d<\/em> he said, barely meeting my eyes. \u201cShe really wanted to meet Emma. And you, of course.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle handed Emma a wrapped box.
\u201cThought you\u2019d love this, sweetie. Picked it out just for you,\u201d<\/em> he said \u2014 as Ava started filming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I watched from the kitchen.
He wanted content. A stage. Father\u2019s Day likes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I gave him one.
I allowed him to pretend\u2026 just to later hit him hard with a \u201csurprise\u201d<\/em> and teach him a lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEmma,\u201d<\/em> I called sweetly. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you show your dad what we made for him?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma handed him THE GIFT<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Kyle opened it, he went pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle rifled through the bundle \u2014 construction paper drawings, crayon-covered cards, and folded notebook pages.
One read:
\u201cDear Daddy, I miss you. Why don\u2019t you love me anymore?\u201d<\/em>
Another said:
\u201cIt\u2019s okay if you\u2019re busy. I still made you a Father\u2019s Day coupon book.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And taped to the last one? A copy of the overdue child support statement \u2014 bold red numbers under the heading: PAST DUE \u2013 SIX MONTHS.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ava\u2019s eyes widened.
\u201cWait\u2026 what is this?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I walked into the room then, calm and collected.
\u201cJust a little Father’s Day scrapbook. Thought it would help him catch up on the time \u2014 and responsibilities \u2014 he\u2019s missed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyle looked like he wanted to disappear.
He turned to Ava.
\u201cLet\u2019s go.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Ava held her phone down now.
\u201cYou said you were a great dad,\u201d<\/em> she whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As they left, Emma tugged my sleeve.

I knelt beside her and kissed her forehead.
