But his dad kept a straight face, staring at me like an FBI interrogator.
The room fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I swallowed and said nervously,
\u201cWell\u2026 I really care about him. A lot, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dad leaned back, crossed his arms, and studied me for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole table exhaled at once\u2014apparently this was part of the family tradition too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, when the dishes were being cleared, his mom asked me to step into the kitchen with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My stomach flipped again.
Had I said something wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She handed me a dish towel and smiled gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just wanted to tell you,\u201d she said as she dried a plate, \u201cyou\u2019re the first girl he\u2019s brought home in a very long time. He\u2019s always been so careful with who he lets into his heart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt my chest warm.
\u201cI care about him more than I can explain,\u201d I admitted softly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She nodded.
\u201cI can see that. And I can also see the way he looks at you. Don\u2019t worry about tonight\u2014we tease because we love. And if you ever feel overwhelmed, you can always sit next to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She winked, and for the first time that night, I truly felt at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ride Home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When we left, my boyfriend squeezed my hand and said,
\u201cI can\u2019t believe they scared you like that. I\u2019m so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I laughed.
\u201cIt\u2019s your fault too!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grinned.

My heart fluttered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I leaned my head on his shoulder as he drove, feeling warm, safe, and unexpectedly happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sweet Ending<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When he walked me to my door, he paused and said,
\u201cYou know\u2026 my mom asked me earlier if I think you\u2019re the one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My breath caught.
