Democrats are quietly readying themselves for the likely exit of Nancy Pelosi \u2014 the party\u2019s longtime power broker, fundraising juggernaut and Trump foil \u2014 as whispers grow she\u2019ll hang it up after Tuesday\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pelosi, 85, is expected to signal her plans once California voters weigh in on \u201cProposition 50,\u201d a redistricting push she\u2019s been championing that Democrats hope will pad their House numbers next November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Multiple California and Capitol Hill Democrats told NBC News they believe the San Francisco icon won\u2019t run again in 2026, ending nearly four decades in Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI wish she would stay for 10 more years,\u201d one California Democrat said. \u201cI think she\u2019s out. She\u2019s going to go out with Prop 50 overwhelmingly passing, and what a crowning achievement for her to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If she steps aside, it would close the book on a historic run for the first woman Speaker of the House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It would also light the fuse on an all-out fight for her seat in deep-blue San Francisco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Notably, Pelosi hasn\u2019t blocked two Democrats already eyeing her district \u2014 state Sen. Scott Wiener and ex-tech exec Saikat Chakrabarti, a former top aide to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. And she\u2019s sitting on more than $1.5 million cash despite raising over $2 million this cycle \u2014 a serious war chest, but not one signaling a long campaign ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a recent California delegation gathering, Pelosi also reportedly said that she looked forward to watching Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sworn in as the first Black speaker \u2014 \u201cif she\u2019s still allowed on the floor,\u201d according to a source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI think she\u2019s preparing to exit the stage,\u201d a Democratic leadership aide said. \u201cWe will not fully appreciate the time we have spent with her\u201d until she\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bay Area insiders are reading the same tea leaves. \u201cMost people think it is highly unlikely that she will run for another term,\u201d one local Democratic elected official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pelosi\u2019s office responded to the report with a vague message urging Californians to vote with her on Proposition 50 in this week\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
