A young man shopping in a supermarket noticed a little old lady following him around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he stopped, she stopped. Furthermore, she kept staring at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually, she overtook him at the checkout. Turning to him, she said,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I hope I haven\u2019t made you feel uneasy; it\u2019s just that you look so much like my late son.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The young man smiled and replied,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That\u2019s okay.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

She hesitated, then added,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I know it\u2019s silly, but if you\u2019d call out, \u2018Goodbye, Mom,\u2019 as I leave the store, it would make me feel so happy.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

He agreed. As she left the store, he called out,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Goodbye, Mom!”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The old lady waved warmly, smiling as she walked out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the cashier finished ringing up his items, the young man\u2019s jaw dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That will be $327.50,” the cashier said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Confused, he frowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That\u2019s impossible. I only bought a few things.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The cashier replied matter-of-factly,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Your mother said you\u2019d be paying for her groceries too.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The young man stood frozen for a moment, realizing what had just happened. The \u201csweet\u201d old lady wasn\u2019t grieving a son \u2014 she was running a scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Half embarrassed, half impressed by her cunning, he sighed and paid the bill, making a mental note to be more cautious next time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her face turned crimson as other shoppers turned to look. This time, the bill \u2014 for her<\/em> cart \u2014 rang up at over $400, and she had no choice but to pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
