{"id":1551,"date":"2025-08-12T22:20:11","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T22:20:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/states-news.com\/?p=1551"},"modified":"2025-08-12T22:20:16","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T22:20:16","slug":"trump-declares-crime-emergency-in-dc-deploys-national-guard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/states-news.com\/?p=1551","title":{"rendered":"Trump Declares \u2018Crime Emergency\u2019 In DC, Deploys National Guard"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>President Donald Trump on Monday declared a \u201ccrime emergency\u201d in Washington, D.C., ahead of an announcement that he\u2019s deploying an as-yet-undetermined number of National Guard troops to help patrol the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, Trump \u2014 who took the podium with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi flanking him \u2014 said he will attempt to work with Congress to change existing laws and policies in crime-ridden U.S. cities like Chicago that have eliminated cash bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis dire public safety crisis stems directly from the abject failures of the city\u2019s local leadership. The \u2018radical left\u2019 city council adopted no cash bail. By the way, every place in the country where you have no cash bail is a disaster. That\u2019s what started the problem,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CNN&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/trump-presidency-dc-crime-08-11-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;that the nation\u2019s capital essentially eliminated cash bail decades ago, in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to end that in Chicago,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to change the statute, and I\u2019m going to have to get the Republicans to vote, because the Democrats are weak on crime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut we\u2019re going to change no cash bail. We\u2019re going to change the statute and get rid of some of the other things, and we\u2019ll count on the Republicans in Congress and the Senate to vote,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, Trump said he is designating Drug Enforcement Administration Administrator Terry Cole as interim federal commissioner of the DC Metropolitan Police Department. The president described Cole as one of the \u201ctop in the country\u201d and told him to run the department \u201ctough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also Read :<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/states-news.com\/?p=1548\"> Newsom Gives Trump 24-Hour Ultimatum \u2014 Instantly Regrets It<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m officially invoking section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, you know what that is, and placing the DC Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control,\u201d Trump told the assembled reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said his actions come as \u201csomething\u2019s out of control, but we\u2019re going to put it in control very quickly, like we did on the southern border.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC, and they\u2019re going to be allowed to do their job properly,\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1973 Home Rule Act permits the president to assume control of Washington, D.C.\u2019s police force for up to 48 hours if he \u201cdetermines that special conditions of an emergency nature exist,\u201d requiring the department\u2019s use for federal purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, no federal takeover of the D.C. police had ever occurred under the Home Rule Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law allows the president to extend control beyond the initial 48 hours by notifying the chairs and ranking members of the congressional committees responsible for D.C. affairs, though it is unclear whether Trump has done so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any request to maintain control for more than 30 days must be approved by Congress through legislation, CNN added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Sunday, Trump vowed on Truth Social to evict homeless persons from the nation\u2019s capital. \u201cThe Homeless have to move out, IMMEDIATELY,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cWe will give you places to stay, but FAR from the Capital. The Criminals, you don\u2019t have to move out.
