{"id":1519,"date":"2025-08-11T14:32:44","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T14:32:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/states-news.com\/?p=1519"},"modified":"2025-08-11T14:34:28","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T14:34:28","slug":"texas-camp-mourns-8-year-old-mary-stevens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/states-news.com\/?p=1519","title":{"rendered":"Texas Camp Mourns 8-Year-Old Mary Stevens"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A grieving Texas mother whose 8-year-old daughter died when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/06\/us-news\/perfect-storm-of-conditions-fueled-the-deadly-texas-flooding-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">catastrophic flash floods<\/a>&nbsp;ripped through Camp Mystic is desperately seeking the return of her child\u2019s cherished stuffed toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacy Stevens, whose daughter Mary Barrett Stevens was among the 27 killed when tragedy struck the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/04\/us-news\/camp-mystic-attended-by-daughters-of-texas-political-elite-for-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all-girls Christian camp<\/a>&nbsp;on July 4, said the youngster\u2019s beloved brown monkey was swept away in the deadly floodwaters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooking for my daughter\u2019s monkey that she has had her whole life and took with her to camp,\u201d Stevens&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/1090988999613116\/user\/7904653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote Tuesday in a since-deleted public post in a Facebook group<\/a>&nbsp;focused on recovering lost items from the Guadalupe River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe lost my daughter and would love to have it back as it was her most prized possession. It has her name on the tag \u2014 a square sticker with Mary Barrett Stevens on it. Project, a nonprofit organization, has since claimed to have sent a replacement plush toy to the heartbroken mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DL8Ec_cyzHP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">group wrote on Instagram Thursday.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Camp Mystic, founded in 1926, didn\u2019t evacuate before the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/tag\/texas-flooding-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devastating rainfall<\/a>&nbsp;in the already flood-prone area along the Guadalupe River led to the deadliest floods Texas has seen in more than a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"659\" ravaged the grounds of the Kerr County summer camp, killing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-news\/haunting-photos-show-a-glimpse-into-texas-camp-mystic-cabin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">8- and 9-year-old campers, their teenage counselors<\/a>, and the camp\u2019s owner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary, a student at Highland Park Elementary School in Austin, was remembered by loved ones as a kind-hearted, bright and compassionate child with an \u201cinfectious\u201d laugh,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/honor-mary-stevens-support-her-family\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a GoFundMe&nbsp;<\/a>created to support the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"639\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/states-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Screenshot-2025-08-11-163151.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1525\" offered words to her lost child via&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/2025\/07\/06\/camp-mystic-girls-identified-linnie-mccown-mary-stevens-texas-flood-victims\/84485946007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Austin American-Statesman.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have left the most positive impact on everyone who knew you. I\u2019m the luckiest that I got to be your mom and I will never stop loving you and trying to live life as you did. Fearless. Enthusiastic. Compassionate. And full of joy,\u201d Stevens said, addressing Mary, according to the local outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur world is shattered but I have peace getting your letters and knowing you were having the time of your life at camp and had a dance party with all of your friends before the Lord decided to take you from us. He has bigger plans for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stevens did not immediately respond to messages from The Post on Thursday afternoon.
