I Accidentally Dropped My 14-Year-Old Son\u2019s Piggy Bank \u2013 And It Wasn\u2019t Just Money Inside<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a day off and decided to stay home to tackle some household chores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was doing laundry, cooking, cleaning, and just waiting for my husband to come home from work and my son to get back from school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While I was cleaning my son’s room, I decided to clear out some junk from his closet. That’s when I stumbled upon a piggy bank I’d never seen before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It struck me as odd since my son is 14 and hasn’t used kid stuff like piggy banks in ages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I picked it up, smiling, but then I accidentally dropped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It shattered on the floor, and out spilled a bunch of HUNDRED-DOLLAR BILLS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was totally shocked \u2014 we don\u2019t spoil him with that kind of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then I looked deeper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the money, there were small folded notes, a key, and\u2026 something that made my heart skip a beat \u2014 a small packet wrapped in black plastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I froze. My first thought was\u2026 No. Please, not drugs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With trembling hands, I opened the first folded note. My stomach tightened as I read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“For Mom and Dad. When we have to leave.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The second note was even more disturbing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I picked up the mysterious key, trying to figure out what it could possibly unlock. It wasn\u2019t for our house, and it didn\u2019t look like a bike lock key either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The small black plastic packet was heavier than it looked. I hesitated \u2014 part of me didn\u2019t want to know. But I slowly unwrapped it\u2026 and inside was an old USB flash drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would my son be hiding money, strange notes, and a USB? And why did the notes sound like they were written for some kind of escape?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chill ran down my spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound of the front door unlocking jolted me. My son was home. I quickly swept the money and items back together and hid them behind me as he walked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He froze when he saw my face \u2014 and then his eyes darted to the broken pieces of the piggy bank on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom\u2026 you weren\u2019t supposed to see that,\u201d he said, his voice barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My hands tightened around the USB.
\u201cWhat is this, and where did you get all this money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He glanced nervously toward the window, then back at me.
\u201cPlease\u2026 not here. They might be watching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart pounded.
