My granddad was just walking down the street when he spotted something strange on the ground.
He took a photo without thinking much of it. But once he looked closer\u2014and figured out what was really going on\u2014he began to panic. \ud83d\ude1e<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, I get tired of my job. I\u2019m sure many people feel the same way when they wake up not wanting to face another workday. But unlike many jobs, mine never puts me in physical danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefighting<\/strong> is a very different story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefighters risk their lives every time they go on duty, and they rarely get enough credit for their courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I was younger, I dreamed of being a firefighter\u2014if my NBA career didn\u2019t work out\u2014but now I\u2019m just grateful others are brave enough to take on that dangerous role instead of me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firefighters don\u2019t only rescue people from burning buildings or car crashes\u2014they also battle wildfires<\/strong>, which can be one of the most destructive natural disasters on Earth. Wildfires don\u2019t just burn themselves out; they spread quickly<\/strong>, devouring everything in their path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few years ago, a massive wildfire in Portugal<\/strong> required over 1,150 firefighters<\/strong> to bring it under control. The scene was terrifying\u2014but it also produced one of the most powerful and humbling images<\/strong> I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man named Pedro Br\u00e1s<\/strong> shared a photo that went viral: it shows a group of exhausted firefighters<\/strong> sleeping on the ground by a smoky riverbank. They had been working nonstop for 24 hours straight<\/strong>, and they took just 25 minutes of rest<\/strong> before heading back into danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No beds.
No shelter.
Just the dirt beneath them and smoke in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This photo is more than just a striking image\u2014it\u2019s a reminder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reminder of the extreme conditions firefighters face.
A reminder of the sacrifices<\/strong> they make to protect others.
And a reminder that while we go to work tired or annoyed\u2026
some people go to work knowing they might not come home.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
