At first, I thought it was just a phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cat would crawl onto his lap during Zoom calls. Sit on the keyboard while he typed. Meow outside the bathroom door if he dared try to shower alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So naturally, my husband adapted. Built a standing desk. Started wearing that ridiculous sling to \u201ckeep his arms free.\u201d Now the cat rides around in it like a baby kangaroo while he answers emails or makes coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was cute. A little codependent\u2014but cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But last week, I walked in on something I wasn\u2019t supposed to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was standing at the desk, like usual, cat tucked securely in his makeshift wrap. Headphones on, talking into the mic for a meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was about to tap him on the shoulder when he said, softly, \u201cYou\u2019re the only one who stayed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He wasn\u2019t talking to the meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was whispering to the cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later that evening, after dinner, I couldn\u2019t get it out of my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I finally sat next to him on the couch and asked gently, \u201cWhat did you mean when you said the cat was the only one who stayed?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked startled, as if I had uncovered something he didn\u2019t even realize was visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, he said nothing. Then, with a sigh that sounded years heavy, he spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When my mom got sick, everyone disappeared. Friends stopped visiting. Family called less and less. When she passed, the house felt… hollow.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice trembled. \u201cYou remember when we adopted Whiskers? It was two weeks after the funeral. I couldn\u2019t sleep. I couldn\u2019t eat. But that tiny ball of fur climbed onto my chest and just… stayed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked down, stroking the cat now peacefully purring in his lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I guess I never let go of that moment. It felt like… finally, someone wasn\u2019t leaving.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My heart broke. I\u2019d always seen the cat as a quirky companion, not as my husband’s silent lifeline through grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reached out, placing my hand over his.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m not going anywhere either,”<\/em> I whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tears welled in his eyes, and for the first time in months, he set the cat down and pulled me into his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whiskers purred between us, as if approving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And from that day on, I no longer saw a silly man obsessed with his cat.
