I married Claire, a wonderful woman and single mom to two beautiful girls, Emma (8) and Lily (6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our first week living together, I noticed the girls whispering and glancing at the basement door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, Emma asked me, “Do you ever wonder what’s in the basement?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said it so seriously that I laughed nervously and asked why. She just smiled and walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning, Lily dropped her spoon and said, sing-song, “Daddy hates loud noises.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I froze. Claire had only ever said their dad was \u201cgone.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, Claire went to work while I stayed home with the girls, who were sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around midday, Emma came up to me with Lily close behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Do you want to visit Daddy?” she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What?” I stammered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In the basement,” Lily added casually. “Mommy keeps him there.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My blood ran cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was Claire hiding something? Was their dad\u2026 alive?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Sure,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “Let’s go see.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door wasn\u2019t locked. I hesitated, then slowly turned the knob and pushed it open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside was\u2026 a large, old wooden trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confused, I looked back at the girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Where\u2019s your dad?” I asked, my voice shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma skipped over to the trunk and opened it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside were dozens of photo albums, worn and dusty. Lily pulled one out and opened it on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“See? That\u2019s Daddy,” she said, pointing to a photo of a smiling man, arms around Claire and the girls when they were toddlers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I exhaled in relief\u2014but confusion remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emma looked up at me. “Mommy says he\u2019s here because he loved us too much and wouldn\u2019t leave. So she kept him close.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chills ran down my spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just then, I noticed something else inside the trunk\u2014letters. Dozens of them. All unopened. All addressed to Claire\u2026 from a correctional facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My stomach turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, I heard the front door slam upstairs. Claire was home early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at the girls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Let\u2019s keep this a secret, okay?” I whispered, closing the trunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we hurried upstairs, my mind raced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who was this man? Why had Claire never mentioned prison? What else was she hiding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing was clear: my new family had far more secrets than I\u2019d ever imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
