She looked me square in the eyes. \u201cHe\u2019s not who he says he is. His real name is Daniel Pierce. We\u2019ve been tracking him across state lines. He has a history of marrying women, having children \u2014 then disappearing with the babies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I staggered back. \u201cNo. That can\u2019t be right. We\u2019ve been together five years. He \u2014 he\u2019s not like that!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nearly collapsed onto the steps. \u201cBut why? Why my baby?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
